Vodafone sees challenges in NBN entry - Communications - News - ZDNet Australia: "Vodafone has admitted that it is tough for new entrants to launch services on the National Broadband Network (NBN), and has called on the government to publicise the improved competition on the $35.9 billion project.

Although Vodafone's global company is a major player in fixed-line markets in Europe, boasting some 8 million customers worldwide, Vodafone previously held off becoming a fixed-line internet service provider (ISP) in Australia due to the incumbency of Telstra as a vertically integrated wholesale provider, Vodafone's general manager of industry strategy and public policy Matthew Lobb told the joint parliamentary committee on the NBN in Sydney this morning."

Rollout Times Will Be The New NBN Battlefield | Gizmodo Australia

Rollout Times Will Be The New NBN Battlefield | Gizmodo Australia: "When the NBN three year rollout plan was announced last Thursday, Malcolm Turnbull was quick to go on the attack, as is Coalition policy in these cases. But something had changed; rather than complain on the grounds of cost, the new battlefront appears to be one of timing.

At yesterday’s NBN Co media briefing, representatives were quick to label Turnbull’s attacks as “odd” based on the difference between the trial and stage one rollouts, but it appears that Coalition MPs aren’t done with this particular tack as yet."

Two years until NBN hits peak roll-out - Communications - News - ZDNet Australia

Two years until NBN hits peak roll-out - Communications - News - ZDNet Australia: "It may still be two years before NBN Co begins rolling out fibre to 6000 premises a day, according to chief operating officer Ralph Steffens.

Following Thursday's announcement of NBN Co's three-year roll-out plan to reach 3.5 million premises, NBN Co has entered the volume phase of its roll-out. However, Steffens told journalists yesterday that the company expects it will take between 18 and 24 months to reach the estimated peak roll-out speed of 6000 premises a day.

Steffens re-iterated comments by NBN Co CEO Mike Quigley, saying the main objective was to ensure that there would be a continuous roll-out over that time."

Want An NBN Job? Train In Fibre Splicing | Lifehacker Australia: "At yesterday’s media briefing on the NBN rollout, NBN Co chief operating officer Ralph Steffens discussed the human element of building the network in some detail, though he shied away from giving specific figures on who would be employed. In part, that’s because NBN Co uses a large number of contractors and may outsource other functions in the future."

NBN Co: How We Chose Our Sites, And Why Turnbull’s Attacks Are Decidedly ‘Odd’ | Gizmodo Australia

NBN Co: How We Chose Our Sites, And Why Turnbull’s Attacks Are Decidedly ‘Odd’ | Gizmodo Australia: "At a media briefing in Sydney today, NBN Co executives outlined in more detail how it picked the sites in the new 3 year plan, as well as why Malcolm Turnbull’s attacks on NBN Co’s plans are “odd”.

A lot of Gizmodo readers were keen to find out if they were on the three-year rollout plan announced last Thursday, but for every reader that was elated to discover they were, there were three that were cranky they weren’t. That makes mathematical sense; the three-year plan covers around a quarter of the premises in Australia.

At NBN Co’s headquarters in Sydney today, NBN Co chief operating officer Ralph Steffens laid out in a little more detail how NBN Co chose the sites it did.

“It’s a straightforward exercise, but then an incredibly complex one to pull off. Once you have announced your first sites you need to build from there. You cannot build a patchwork across the nation, because that would be the most inefficient way to build the network.”"

We Haven’t Seen 75% Of NBN Plans Yet | Lifehacker Australia

We Haven’t Seen 75% Of NBN Plans Yet | Lifehacker Australia: "As our Planhacker tables have been demonstrating for quite a while now, there are already a good number of NBN plans to choose from. But if what you’ve seen so far hasn’t tickled your fancy, it’s worth remembering that the vast majority of ISPs which intend to sell NBN plans haven’t yet announced them.

At a media briefing on the NBN Co rollout in Sydney today, we were reminded that there are now 40 providers who have signed NBN wholesale agreements. However, while that represents 95 per cent of the marketplace (unsurprising in a world of shrinking ISP choice), only 26 per cent are currently offering plans. The idea that what we have is all we’ll get it is one of the more common NBN misconceptions."
