Optus and NBN Co agreement makes business sense: Analyst - paul budde, NBN, national broadband network, malcolm turnbull - Computerworld

Optus and NBN Co agreement makes business sense: Analyst - paul budde, NBN, national broadband network, malcolm turnbull - Computerworld: "The $800 million agreement with Optus and NBN Co is a logical consequence of Australia’s telecommunications infrastructure policy, according to independent telco analyst, Paul Budde.

Budde told Computerworld Australia that it made sense for the government to pay compensation to Optus for decommissioning its hybrid fibre coax (HFC) network because the National Broadband Network (NBN) will be the main broadband utility."

Telstra's Nine hopes put content in spotlight - Going Public - Blogs - ZDNet Australia: "Telstra is thinking about purchasing the Nine Network, and is currently going over the numbers with an investment bank advisor, according to The Australian. Does this put the cat among the pigeons for the competition watchdog?

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has been very busy in the content area, having to investigate Foxtel's acquisition of Austar. It finally decided that the deal could go through, after seeking and obtaining Foxtel's agreement to a number of conditions saying that it wouldn't keep certain content to itself in exclusive deals."

Peter Martin: Build the NBN if you must, but please don't destroy working assets

Peter Martin: Build the NBN if you must, but please don't destroy working assets: "The Optus high speed cable internet network is a national asset. Comprising 25,000 kilometres of coaxial cable strung across 550,000 poles in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane supported by 7000 kilometres of fibre the provided Telstra with its first genuine competition, putting its own wires direct into half a million homes.

Telstra fought back with FoxTel, Optus got burnt and has probably never recovered the cost of stringing the cables. But from an economic point of view what’s important is that the asset exists. Its costs have been sunk. What Optus has now is an asset that costs relatively little to operate and can deliver peak download speeds of 100 Mbps - far faster anything on Telstra’s copper wires. "

iTWire - ACCC clears Optus to scrap HFC network and use NBN instead

iTWire - ACCC clears Optus to scrap HFC network and use NBN instead: "The ACCC has cleared, provisionally, the proposed deal between Optus and NBN Co under which Optus is to be paid around $800m to shut down its HFC network and transfer customers onto the NBN.
The agreement was announced on June 2011, at the same time as the definitive agreements between Telstra and NBN Co and between Telstra and the Government.
It provided for Optus progressively migrate its HFC customers to the NBN once the network had been rolled out in an area and was ready to provide services to customers served by Optus' HFC network."

NBN users opt for 100Mbps - Communications - News - ZDNet Australia

NBN users opt for 100Mbps - Communications - News - ZDNet Australia: "Customers are picking the top fibre plan that is available on the National Broadband Network (NBN), more than any other plan, CEO Mike Quigley has revealed.

Quigley told a Budget Estimates hearing last night that, of the approximately 3500 customers with active fibre services on the NBN, the 100Mbps down and 40Mbps up plan had proved to be the most popular, so far.

"Overall, 37 per cent of active services on our fibre network have been on the fastest speed tier, which is 100Mbps down and 40Mbps up. Only 18 per cent of the active services on our fibre network are on the entry level speed tier of 12Mbps down and 1Mbps up."

Quigley revealed that 10 per cent of customers were on the 50Mbps plan, and 35 per cent were on the 25Mbps plan. Although NBN Co is far behind the 10,000 customers it had expected to have services active for by 30 June in its original corporate plan, the uptake of the higher tiered plans is much higher than was expected."

The NBN, service providers and you ... what could go wrong?: "Unless you’ve been boycotting all forms of media in the past five years, you’ll be aware that the National Broadband Network (NBN) is well and truly on its way.

For some of us the NBN is already here, and for others it will hopefully arrive in a year or two. But for most Australians, the NBN will not arrive for five to ten years.

The NBN rollout map (see below) provides an estimated guide to where and when the NBN will be rolled out."

Repeat after me: 'It's the digital economy, stupid' - Business - Independent.ie: "reland's economy can be kickstarted, according to UPC boss Dana Strong -- but only if we empower more small and medium sized enterprises to go online to create wealth and jobs

Before your eyes glaze over, this is not all about the various merits of fibre optic cables, network routers or modems. Instead, it concerns us all and our way of life for the future.

Broadband -- its availability and the way we will use it to enhance our lives -- must involve us all. The availability of high speed broadband has long been high on the Government's agenda and is the focus of much debate among business owners and consumers alike. Why it is so important and the role it has to play in Ireland"

NBN Co - National Broadband Network - Australia | NBN Co to simplify migration of traditional phone services onto fibre

NBN Co - National Broadband Network - Australia | NBN Co to simplify migration of traditional phone services onto fibre: "NBN Co selects Primus for tests on telephone services

NBN Co will work with Primus to test new software designed to make it easier for any telecommunications or internet service provider to offer traditional analogue telephone services to consumers and businesses using the fibre network.
A successful test should give consumers confidence they can go to a wide range of service providers and switch from the copper network to fibre and have a quality telephone service using their existing telephone equipment.
Since the commercial launch of fibre services on the NBN, retail service providers have had the option of providing a telephone service that lets a homeowner use an existing analogue phone, or providing a telephone service over the broadband data connection, usually requiring new customer equipment. It should be possible to maintain the same phone number in either instance."
