In its short life so far the NBN project has lost its Chief Executive, had problems with asbestos and payments to contractors, and suffered cost blowouts, but the rollout continues.

NBN Co appoints new SA construction contractor amid construction halts | ZDNet: "As NBN Co hands out additional construction work in South Australia to SA Power Networks, National Broadband Network some construction activity in Ballarat and Hobart has reportedly stopped amid disputes over payment of subcontractors in those locations.

SA Power Networks will roll out National Broadband Network (NBN) fibre to 300,000 South Australian premises over the next three years in addition to the work already underway in the state by troubled contractor Syntheo.

An NBN Co spokesperson would not say what the value of the contract was, but the agreement will see SA Power Networks design and construct the local and distribution network from a fibre access node through to every street covering the 300,000 premises."

How the #NBN has (actually) changed my life | marcus westbury

How the #NBN has (actually) changed my life | marcus westbury: "It’s a quirk of fate and geography that our family home and my work at the Renew Australia office in the Melbourne suburb of Brunswick are both smack bang in the middle of one of the first mainland rollout zones for the Australia’s fibre-to-the-home National Broadband Network. We’ve now been on it for more than a year.

Recently, our family was asked by a PR company (long story!) whether we would be be happy to feature in a media event to showcase how the NBN was changing our life. It is and I was happy to talk about it. Apparently a prominent celebrity was going to come to our house with a gaggle of press types in tow and show us doing “typical” NBN-type things. Of course, because it was to be a staged media event the “typical” things they wanted us to do bore little if any relation to what we actually do with the network, and (as it transpired) the whole thing got cancelled at the last minute anyway."

The company said it reached 163,500 existing premises, known as “brownfield premises”, with its fibre optic cabling and a total 207,500 premises once new developments are counted.

But of the brownfield premises, more than 55,000 do not have the necessary equipment to get a service."

ACCC proposes NBN wholesale price checks

ACCC proposes NBN wholesale price checks: "The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says it may review prices for the national broadband network within the first ten years of the network’s operation, after internet service providers voiced ongoing concern over the prices charged by NBN Co.

The proposal is one of several the competition watchdog has put to NBN Co and the telecommunications industry as it prepares to make a decision on the “special access undertaking”, the document governing pricing and access arrangements to the $37.4 billion for the next three decades."
